The vision of the MFL department is to develop students into competent, confident linguists with functional communication skills in the target language.

Aspire:

To achieve this vision, students will:

• develop a solid understanding of the past, present and future tenses
• develop an ability to manipulate grammatical rules
• develop a broad, functional vocabulary, applicable to contexts that students may realistically encounter
• explore cultural capital through an understanding of linguistic and key cultural differences and be able to express and justify personal opinions on these

Overall students will be proud of their achievements and therefore have the confidence to demonstrate this regularly in lessons through helping each other and using the target language as much as possible in (and out) of lessons.

Enrich:

Opportunities for enrichment will be provided through the Language Leader’s Course offering students the opportunity to teach their chosen language to primary aged children. Trips to visit countries where the target language is spoken should be arranged on minimum of a bi-annual basis. Opportunities will be sought to invite Spanish speakers into school to work with MFL students, whenever possible. The European Day of Languages will be promoted across the school every 26^th September.

Belong:

Students will be enthused to develop a passion for the target language through engaging and relevant lessons where students understand why the content applies to them using real world contexts. Every other lesson will include a careers based question encouraging students to reflect on the importance of language learning and potential career opportunities linked to this subject.
