Science

We wish that every student, whether pursuing a scientific career or not, leave us with the ability to think like a scientist and be future ready with the transferrable skills that the subject offers.

In science we teach students the importance of what it means to be healthy and how good health can lead to longevity. We discuss how lifestyle factors can impact our health and the implications this can have both short and long term. The responsibility that a scientist has can be critical and students are continually being encouraged to reflect on their decisions in practical tasks and decisions scientists have made over the decades and how this can impact the wider world.

Across the KS3 and KS4 curriculum we teach science to excite and enthuse the students into exploring our natural and physical world. We encourage them to question logic, ideas and thinking to help them understand how things work and how science underpins our everyday life making students reflective practitioners. In the biology and chemistry courses we look at the human impacts we have on our planet and how key changes are or could be made to help protect our planet and promote sustainability for future generations.

As a department we strive to be positive role models to help promote women in science and narrow the gender gap of females studying science and pursuing careers in science and engineering. We are also active promoters of STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) providing opportunities through external competitions e.g ‘Teentech’ as well taking part in nationwide events like British Science Week. We are also running an extra-curricular STEAM club working towards a discovery award at KS3. These opportunities for the students help to extend the students beyond the classroom and provide real life examples and applications of science.
