English
In English we provide a curriculum that develops a love of reading and writing. Within the English classrooms the students journey to other places, times and worlds. Outside of the classroom the students enjoy experiences such as plays, poetry, debates and clubs. Through literature and language, our aim is to give the students a wealth of opportunities to build their knowledge and to be ready to take any path they wish to pursue once leaving school and throughout their lives. The texts chosen for reading are diverse, inclusive and develop critical thinking skills. Whilst reading the perspectives of writers of all identities and backgrounds they build a sense of their own identity and sense of citizenship. Our students develop and use their voice.
Through a variety of both non – fiction and fiction texts, we explore the importance of positive health choices and the explore the impact for people who have an unhealthy life by choice or for reasons beyond their control. This is further developed through transactional writing skills where we develop students’ ability to challenge viewpoints articulately through extended writing or spoken language.
Through the nature of the subject, students are encouraged to be intellectually curious and challenged on their views. This is further embedded within the curriculum with a number of opportunities that offer the ability to be exposed to texts that cover a range of themes and perspectives and help students to form opinions and have curiosity with the skills to read with skepticism. Students are encouraged to develop and use their voice through performance, debates, presentations and group discussions. English lends itself naturally to enhance a student’s ability to explore the world behind the words on a page and to be confident in arguing and examining interpretations and authorial intent.
